Letterpress studio! I've really come to love this process, especially now that I feel more comfortable with it. Despite the pain, I love carving linoleum, the look it gives, the process. Meditative. I wish I had continued access to the studio. This is my final postcard design for the class, by the way. I also added a layer of text, but I like the text better either by itself or with the shovel without the sunburst. Funny how that ended up. I will have photos of the final piece with text tomorrow probably. Until then!
Linoblock was always my favorite too for all the same reasons you pointed out. Have you tried the unmounted type? I always found it to be softer and easier to carve. I also used to carve as much as I could outside in the sun, the warmth also seemed to soften it up.

ReplyDeleteHi Karen! We get this kind unmounted, but in order to put it through the letterpress, it has to be "type-high", which is the universal height of lead type. I could carve it and then mount it... I hadn't thought of that. People have told me that heating it as you go with a blow dryer helps, too. I'll have to keep these tips in mind for my next block.

I didn't know you used to print, Carlene! I think I missed my chance to reprint the shovels.... I have several of the composite prints that I can sell, but I really like just the shovel and text together... I think I'm going to try doing it at home over the summer. Then I can carve tons of blocks and do tons of printing!
